BME Engagement in Census 2011
SREC is working with the Office of National Statistics to ensure that Sutton residents from BME communities are aware of how important it is to engage in the Census 2011 by completing the Census Form. We are working to promote the benefits that the Borough and residents gain, as this form directly impacts the resources that are given to the borough to provide services.
We need to let people know that the council funding from the central government such as health, education, housing and others would be affected by the information they give for years to come, until the next census in. In addition, the local government will lose £500 worth of funding from central government for each house does not return their completed Census Form.
Whoever you are and wherever you live, the census provides localised population statistics which can help census users make sure there are enough of the right people around to help you – from pool lifeguards and youth workers to refuse collectors, paramedics, teachers, bus drivers, and more.
And by helping businesses to understand the make-up of the local population, it could also bring many more good things into your area, from smart designer labels to affordable high-street fashion, health spas and mobility specialists, out of town hypermarkets and corner shops.
All local councils in England and Wales rely on census population statistics to define the needs of their community and help make sure they get enough government funding to serve it. How much they get is directly related to how many and what kind of people the census shows live in their area. A few households short and someone, somewhere could lose out. The census needs to include everyone, everywhere – and that’s why everyone has to take part.
Understanding the make-up of national, regional and local populations helps to make sure communities are offered and are able to access services appropriate for their needs.
We know that this information is personal but we can assure you that there are strict measures to ensure that it is safe!!
